NDC will be most unpopular ahead of 2028 elections – Sammi Awuku

The Akuapem North Member of Parliament and Senior Campaign Advisor to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Sammi Awuku, has predicted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be at a disadvantage ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Awuku said he would be surprised if the NDC elects its presidential candidate before the last quarter of 2027, a situation he believes will weaken the party going into the elections.

“Currently, nearly every appointee of Akufo-Addo is under investigation, and there is a tendency to find issues even where none exist. The elected leader, who will be chosen on January 31, must do everything possible to unify the party members so we can hit the ground running,” he said.

Awuku also urged party aspirants to tone down their rhetoric as the NPP’s internal primaries draw to a close. He stressed that unity will be critical after the election of a new party leader on January 31, noting that whoever emerges victorious will need the full support of the party to secure victory in 2028.

He further added that the NDC’s challenges would make it easier for the NPP to unite early, insisting that the opposition party will face a situation similar to what the NPP experienced in the 2024 elections.

“In 2028, the NDC will be at a disadvantage. Their popular candidate will not be on the ballot, and they won’t select a flag bearer until after December 2027. This will put them in a position similar to ours in 2024. Electing a flag bearer only two years before the elections means the candidate may struggle to gain traction, as people tend to gravitate towards new leadership,” he said.
