Kennedy Osei Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding the dualisation of the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
In a recent post on his Facebook wall, the MP emphasized that the road project transcends political affiliations and criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their perceived inaction during their 18 years in government.
According to Nyarko, “I get worried and disturbed when people start to ask questions why didn’t the NPP complete the dualisation of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, forgetting that this road transcends beyond the NPP. If there’s any government that should have completed this project, it is the NDC.”
He further highlighted the efforts of past and current governments, stating that the project was initiated beyond Nsawam during President John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration and later continued by President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government up to Apedwa Junction in his first term.
During Akufo-Addo’s second term, Nyarko added, eight bypasses were constructed from Osino to Konogo, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving the highway infrastructure.
Nyarko dismissed claims that the road is primarily for NPP strongholds, arguing that “those who have benefited greatly from this road are probably the five northern regions, which are NDC strongholds, and the three Bono regions.” He criticized the NDC’s previous administrations for neglecting the road, saying, “In their 18 years in government, they showed no commitment to fixing this road, simply because they viewed it as leading to NPP areas.”
The MP concluded by urging citizens to recognize the efforts made by the current government in advancing the dualisation project, stating that shifting the blame onto the NPP is misleading.
