The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has suspended new admissions at its Accident and Emergency Centre for 24 hours after the facility became overcrowded, management has said.
In a statement issued by the hospital’s Public Affairs Unit, KATH said the A&E Centre had exceeded its capacity and was unable to receive additional emergency cases temporarily.
The hospital said the 37-bed facility was currently managing 61 admitted patients across its critical care zones, with a further 34 patients awaiting admission.
It said the decision was taken to prevent further strain on staff and to ensure that critically ill patients already at the centre receive adequate care.
KATH urged the public to seek emergency services at nearby hospitals in the Ashanti Region while efforts are made to stabilise the situation.
Management said it was engaging the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate to redirect cases to other facilities to ease pressure on the centre.
The hospital added that emergency physicians and medical staff were working to manage the surge in cases and that admissions would resume once capacity improved.
It said the situation was being closely monitored and reviewed periodically.
