Power Outages: “Ghanaians want light, not slogans” – NPP communicator attacks government

Lawuratu Musah-Saaka, a member of the New Patriotic Party communications team, has criticised the governing National Democratic Congress over ongoing power cuts, saying Ghanaians are demanding reliable electricity rather than political slogans.

Speaking to Moro Awudu on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on April 28, she said the recurring power outages, commonly referred to as dumsor, were undermining daily life and affecting all segments of society.

“I just think they are being chased by their own shadows,” she said. “It’s like the things they criticize are the same things they are repeating.”

She argued that the political debate around electricity supply had shifted away from practical solutions to political messaging, while citizens continued to bear the impact of unstable power.

“What are Ghanaians asking for? Ghanaians are not asking for slogans, they’re asking for light, predictability, and honest accounting,” she said.

Ms Musah-Saaka said the effects of the outages were widespread, cutting across political and social lines, and affecting essential services.

“The dumsor we are all experiencing doesn’t differentiate party A from party B. It doesn’t differentiate children from adults. It doesn’t differentiate a hospital from a construction site,” she said.

She also criticised what she described as inconsistent explanations from government officials regarding the cause of the outages, pointing to shifting technical explanations over time.

According to her, earlier public criticisms of maintenance schedules and operational decisions had now become part of current practice under the same administration.

“You hear the likes of the current Energy Minister questioning why lights were going off at night. Today, are we not going off at night?” she asked.

Ms Musah-Saaka insisted that the priority for government should be restoring stability in power supply, arguing that public patience was being tested by repeated disruptions and conflicting messages.
