ASHANTI NPP CONSTITUENCY CHAIRMEN ANNOUNCE NIGHT VIGIL IN HONOUR OF CHAIRMAN WONTUMI

Constituency chairmen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) across the 47 constituencies in the Ashanti Region have announced plans to hold a regional night vigil and prayer session in support of their jailed Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The decision follows an emergency meeting between the regional executive committee, led by Acting Regional Chairman Patrick Acheampong, and constituency leaders in Kumasi.

Grassroots Mobilization and Prayer Vigil

The constituency chairmen resolved to organize night vigils across the region to express solidarity with Wontumi and offer prayers for his release:

  • Regional Coordination: The 47 constituency chairmen agreed to hold simultaneous gatherings in key constituency centers across the Ashanti Region.
  • Protest Against Sentence: Party executives described the 20-year prison sentence as harsh and reiterated calls on party members to remain united during the legal appeals.
  • Mass Visits: Regional organizers are also coordinating mass visits by party executives and supporters to the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

Legal Appeal and Emergency Meetings

The announcement comes shortly after NPP 2028 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the national executive committee met with regional leaders in Accra to review the High Court judgment.

The High Court in Accra convicted Wontumi on two counts related to illegal mining operations by Akonta Mining Limited in the Samreboi forest reserve, handing down concurrent 20-year prison terms.

Lawyers for the NPP regional chairman have filed an official notice of appeal alongside an application for bail pending appeal at the Court of Appeal. Party leadership urged supporters to remain calm while the legal team pursues the court process.
