Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stepped in to help ease tensions following controversies that disrupted polling station executive elections in the Akyem Swedru and Akyem Oda constituencies in the Eastern Region.

The situation in Akyem Oda reportedly turned tragic after the death of an aide to the constituency Member of Parliament during the disturbances, leading to the suspension of the electoral process.

In Akyem Swedru, disagreements over the conduct of the elections escalated into a court action by a faction within the party.

Speaking after a closed-door meeting with stakeholders from both constituencies, Nana Akomea said Dr. Bawumia’s intervention was aimed at restoring unity within the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

According to him, factions in Akyem Oda have agreed to reconcile and work together, while the group that initiated legal action in Akyem Swedru has agreed to withdraw the case in favour of internal resolution following Dr. Bawumia’s mediation.

Nana Akomea noted that while the intervention has helped calm tensions in both constituencies, the NPP General Secretary is expected to visit the areas soon to consolidate peace efforts and pave the way for the continuation of the suspended polling station elections.
