Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has described the recent floods in Accra as a national tragedy, urging Ghanaians to unite in finding lasting solutions rather than politicising the disaster.
Speaking after touring affected communities on Monday, June 30, 2026, Bawumia extended condolences to families who lost loved ones and property, stressing that the disaster has displaced thousands and disrupted livelihoods. He called for intensified emergency response and greater cooperation from the public in adhering to safety directives.
“Flooding is a national problem. Let us solve it together. This is not the time for partisan blame games,” he said.
Bawumia urged agencies such as NADMO, the Ghana Police Service, and other emergency responders to intensify rescue operations and provide immediate relief to stranded residents. He further suggested that government consider declaring a state of emergency to enable full mobilisation of resources, citing forecasts of more rainfall in the coming days.
He emphasised the need for engineers, hydrologists, and urban planners to work together on long-term flood control measures, including improved drainage systems and climate-resilient infrastructure.
The Vice President’s remarks come after heavy rains on June 29, 2026, which submerged areas such as Shiashie, Tse Addo, Kaneshie, and Circle, leaving residents stranded and property destroyed.
