A High Court in Accra has ordered the extradition of Fredrick Kumi, widely known as “Abu Trica,” to the United States to face criminal charges linked to an alleged $8 million romance fraud scheme.
The ruling marks a significant development in a case that has drawn public attention since Kumi was taken into custody in December 2025. He has since remained in detention while legal proceedings over his extradition unfolded in Ghana.
His lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, confirmed the court’s decision in a Facebook post on Thursday, July 2, noting that the matter had been fast-tracked. Barker-Vormawor, who is currently outside the country on work duties, said he was informed of the ruling shortly after it was delivered.
“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote.
The extradition order follows earlier proceedings in which the Accra High Court granted Kumi bail in the sum of GH¢30 million, backed by two justified sureties, after months of pre-trial detention.
United States authorities are seeking Kumi over allegations that he was involved in a transnational romance scam that reportedly defrauded victims of millions of dollars.
With the latest ruling, the legal battle is expected to shift to the Supreme Court if the defence proceeds with an appeal.
