Suhum MP Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as “Protozoa”, has urged the government to urgently expand Suhum Government Hospital and establish a trauma unit, warning that the facility is collapsing under the weight of accident cases and referrals.
Hospital Under Strain
Addressing Parliament, the MP revealed that nearly 400 accident cases have been recorded in recent months. Built to serve Suhum residents, the hospital’s location on the busy Accra–Kumasi highway has turned it into a de facto trauma centre, drawing victims from across the country.
Protozoa lamented that doctors and nurses face “intense pressure,” with patients lying on the floor due to a lack of space. “The hospital was not originally built as an accident and trauma centre,” he emphasised.
Staggering Statistics
Hospital records presented by the MP show:
- January: 104 cases
- February: 84 cases
- March: 134 cases
- April: 42 cases
- May: 30 cases
- Plus 40 referrals
“These statistics are staggering, which is why the government should reconsider its position on this matter,” he said.
Protozoa urged the government to prioritise hospitals along major highways — including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and Bolgatanga — so accident victims can receive timely care. He stressed that Suhum Hospital must be upgraded to handle emergencies effectively.
He also criticized government’s focus on the 24-hour economy market, arguing that “what people need is not another market, but a functioning hospital that can save lives.”
“Doctors and nurses will want to deal with such cases before they attend to those with diarrhoea and malaria… it will be the worst form of humanity to turn accident victims away,” he warned.
Government Response
No timeline or funding commitment was provided by the government during the parliamentary session.
