The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special team of experienced investigators and intelligence officers to the Central Region to reinforce ongoing police operations and support investigations into the death of a student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

The move forms part of the Ghana Police Service’s broader operational response to ensure a thorough and coordinated investigation into the incident.

According to the Police Service, the team will work closely with regional command structures to strengthen fact-finding efforts and provide additional technical and intelligence support to investigators on the ground.

The deployment follows the discovery of the body of a Level 200 student of the university at Hutchland Beach on Friday morning.

The deceased was identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, whose identity was confirmed after police alerted the university following the discovery of the body.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Ms Avinu, who resided in a private hostel at Amamoma, was last seen on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m.

Her roommate reportedly told investigators that Ms Avinu received a phone call, left their room dressed in casual clothing and did not return.

The circumstances surrounding her disappearance and subsequent death remain under investigation.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the family of the deceased, the university community and the public of its commitment to conducting a professional, transparent and diligent investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police said the reinforcement of investigative personnel underscores the service’s determination to uncover the facts and ensure that all relevant leads are thoroughly pursued.
